in the depths of meditation,
the Self reveals itself.

Contemplative Study Groups

Myndtree’s weekly contemplative study groups offer participants an opportunity to explore the teachings of timeless wisdom texts in a supportive group setting. The orientation of the studies is non-religious and focused on drawing out practical insights that support clarity, compassion, and meaningful living. Each session begins with a 20–30 minute guided meditation, followed by shared reading, commentary, and dialogue. No prior knowledge of the texts is required.
These studies are recommended for serious students and seekers who can commit to a long-term exploration of the text. While continuity is recommended for those who wish to go deeper, each session is designed to stand on its own, and participants are welcome to join even if they cannot attend every meeting.
Gayathri currently leads two contemplative study groups, on the Ātmopadeśa Śatakam and the Satipatthāna Sutta. Previously completed studies include the Bhagavad Gita, the Mandukya Upanishad, and Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. All are welcome. Please contact us for details if you are interested in joining.
Satipatthāna Sutta **NEW**
BEGINNING JANUARY 31st, 2026
SATURDAYS, 11:00 AM - Noon PACIFIC TIME
**We are currently at capacity for in-person participation but you are welcome to join via Zoom. If you are interested in joining in-person in the future if space becomes available, please let us know. Priority will be given to regular Zoom attendees.**
In this study group, we will explore the teachings and practices presented in the Buddha’s discourse on the 'Four Foundations for Mindfulness', the Satipatthāna Sutta (lit. The Discourse on the Foundations of Mindfulness). The Satipatthāna Sutta lays out the Buddha’s direct and complete path for cultivating mindfulness of body, feelings, mind, and mental phenomena as the means to liberation from suffering. Our primary text will be Bhikkhu Anālayo’s seminal commentary, which will guide our inquiry and discussion. Each session will weave together close study of the text with guided meditation practices designed to illuminate and embody its teachings. This study is intended to be deeply transformative and is well suited for those who wish to understand mindfulness not merely as a tool for stress reduction, but as a path to liberation.
The complete study is expected to take between eight months and an year, depending on the pace of the group. Please email me to indicate your interest. The classes will be offered in the hybrid format, both in-person and on Zoom. The in-person gatherings will be held at a home in Palo Alto. Recordings will be made available each week. The classes are offered on a dāna (donation) basis. Any amount offered with a free and open heart will be gratefully accepted. Address and Zoom link provided once you notify me of your interest.
Ātmopadeśa Śatakam
FRIDAYS, 10:30 AM - NOON PACIFIC TIME
This weekly study group will offer its participants an opportunity to study the mystical, poetic masterwork Atmopadesa Satakam (lit. One Hundred Verses of Self-Instruction) by Narayana Guru, originally in Malayalam. It is an elucidation and revaluation of Advaita Vedanta (non-dual philosophy) and explores the nature of consciousness and its expressions as our inner and outer worlds. This study is recommended for serious students and seekers who can commit to a long-term (2-3 years) exploration of the text. It is certain to be deeply transformative.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Press + or - to expand or hide details below.
1. What is the difference between contemplative study groups and regular meditation sessions? Myndtree’s contemplative study groups differ from drop-in meditation sessions or recorded practices by combining meditation with guided exploration of classical wisdom texts such as the Satipatthāna Sutta and Ātmopadeśa Śatakam. Sessions typically begin with 20–30 minutes of guided meditation, followed by reading and discussion. This format offers both direct practice and a philosophical framework for exploring consciousness, liberation from suffering, and living meaningfully through shared inquiry and dialogue.
2. Do I need prior knowledge or experience with contemplative texts to join the study groups? No prior knowledge or experience is required. While the texts we study have Buddhist and Hindu origins, Myndtree’s contemplative study groups are secular and non-religious, focusing on universal insights and practical wisdom. Each session includes guided meditation, reading, and discussion that makes philosophical ideas accessible. Gayathri offers clear explanations and practical examples to support understanding and application in daily life.
3. Are the contemplative study groups offered online or in person, and are recordings available? The Ātmopadeśa Śatakam study, held Fridays at 10:30 AM Pacific, is online only on Zoom. The Satipatthāna Sutta study, held Saturdays at 11:00 AM Pacific, is also on Zoom, and additionally offers limited in-person participation in Palo Alto for Bay Area residents, with attendance capped at 20 participants. All sessions are recorded and available on the Myndtree website for registered participants to review at any time.
4. Can I join a contemplative study group that is already in progress, and do I need to attend every session? Yes, you may join a contemplative study group already in progress, and attendance at every session is not required. Each section is designed to stand on its own for reflection and inquiry. Recordings of previous sessions are available for those who wish to explore earlier material. While regular attendance can deepen understanding and community connection, meaningful participation is possible even if you join partway through or miss sessions.
5. How much does it cost to participate in the study groups? These programs are offered on a dāna, or donation, basis, following a longstanding practice of generosity found in many contemplative traditions. There is no fixed fee, and any amount offered with an open heart is gratefully received. This approach helps ensure that financial circumstances do not prevent access to these teachings.
I have been attending the study groups led by Gayathri for over a year now. She has excellent presence and has been instrumental in helping us deconstruct this very complex book with explanations, examples, and very practical tips. The way she leads the group is just the right balance of self-inquiry, discussion, and meditation. I feel very grateful and lucky to have her with me on this journey. Thank you!!!
I have been part of the contemplative study group for more than a year. Initially, I had gone to give a friend company to the session and truly didn't believe that it could be of any benefit to me. However, only after a few sessions, I realized that I was in a special place. Through these sessions with Gayathri, I learned to get in touch with my inner self. I learned to love myself, to appreciate the goodness in me, and to accept my shortcomings. I learned to accept others for who they are and practice giving unconditionally, because I realized that everyone is fighting their own hidden battles. I learned that to realize and express gratitude is an essential part of a content life. I learned that meditation is a powerful tool that can genuinely help achieve inner peace. I truly believe now that any desired change has to be initiated from within.

I started with Gayathri’s study group a year ago and it is one of the best gifts I have given myself. The messages are spiritual and deep. The group interaction helps you open up and seek deep within yourself. The weekly meetup with this warm and supportive group is a treat for the soul.
I am a somewhat new member in this drop in group. I was already on a spiritual path with another community but was recommended to try this group by a friend. What has touched me the most is the friendships that have opened up for me with like minded people. That was missing in my life. I am grateful to have these sessions as a way to reinforce, re-learn and follow through on applying these important lessons - with friends to help me along.
